Dear One and All!

On behalf of those who struggle to make ends meet and feed their families I thank you for all that you did to make the auction a great success. It was a wonderful turnout and a great event all around. Everyone was so pleased with the tour, the bbq and the auction items.   Amazing job everyone!

I still think the Turpins should start their own TLC Cable show called -
"Pond Boss" like the "Cake Boss" show out of Hoboken NJ -  They'd be perfect!  So giving, so fun, and so hard working.
J

My son, Ben, was thrilled to win the gum ball machine and the tickets to Dorney Park.     We are heading to the Park before school starts! Fun fun …

Thanks again,

Phoebe Kitson

Hi, all:

I totalled up the auction slips last night.  I came up with a total of $3101 - very disappointing to me, considering we earned $2641 last year with only 19 items and we had 59 items this year.

But, I am missing five slips.  One is the Pondless kit from Turpin, which went for over $425, I think.   Another is the tour of the Capitol - RIch and Kate, didn't you get that one?  If so, please let me know what you paid for it (somewhere around $150 I think?).  Then we're missing the Extreme Sports, which I knew about, but we still have the contents of that package; #43 (The S'mores kit) which I think went to Mr. Rice and was still there when I left last night and #57 - Infinite Reiki. I'm sure they were all paid for, I just don't have the slips.

So I guess we ultimately made around $3700.00 on the auction.  Not even close to the $5000.00 I was hoping for.

The items that seemed to be most popular were:

The Fire Pit - 11 bids - $170, value $250.  That outcome made it worth what I paid for it at Kohl's - we got double what I paid for it, because I got a really good deal on it. Thanks, Kirks!

"I'm A Philly Fan" Basket -  the biggest "bang" for the buck, with 9 bids, went for $225 on an approximate value of $175! We'll do that one again!

Mommy and Me Gardening Basket - 6 bids - $25 value - went for $35.  That's another one that I bought all the stuff for; it wasn't donated. We'll do that theme again.

Grilling with Dad - 6 bids - went for $50; a $75 value (ditto above notation).

The Handcrafted bowl from Wendell August Forge - 7 bids - went for $90; $150 value.  Sarah Turpin REALLY kept the hunt on for that bowl! Congratulations, Sarah!

The sheet/comforter set from Boscov's - 8 bids, but only went for $100; a $350 value - I don't know if it would have made a difference if it was King sized instead of Queen.  I may ask Boscov's next year if they can possibly donate a King set instead of a Queen.

Golfing at Whitford Country Club - 7 bids, went for $115; a $250 value

The Best of Chester County - 8 bids - went for $125; $200+ value

The Formal Picnic (that basket I just LOVED) - 9 bids - went for $100, estimated value $200 (Not bad for $30 investment)

The Bicycle Planter was another popular one - with 9 bids - went for $55, valued at $80+.  At least we got back what I paid for it (also from Kohl's, like the fire pit).  I liked that one so much that I bought one for my yard, too.

The Kuerner remarked print had 9 bids on it and went for $120; approximate value of $200 - thanks, Jack, for bringing that to us for the auction! It was a bidding war between two people all the way down the line!

Best Chester County Pubs had 8 bids, but still only went for $75, with a value of $165. But I'd still do that one again.  The Italian dinners basket with the fish-motif platter had 7 bids, but, again, only went for $75, $30 above the minimum bid - with a value of $175.00.  The picnic at Va La Vineyard was also popular and went for $55, with a value of $50+, so that was a good one, too.

That's my report.  Thanks to everyone for talking up the auction during the event.  Now I'm on to Stocking for Soldiers! Onward!

Diane

Name of the Year

What do Taco Vandervelde, Calamity McIntire and Iona Knipl have in common? They are all nominated in the 2009 Name of the Year contest. But there are many, many more and all are seeded in a bracket, much like your March Madness bracket.

Name of the Year was founded in 1983 on an Ivy League campus. Its mission has remained unchanged: to discover, verify, nominate, elect and disseminate great names. All names included are, to the best of their knowledge, real. No malice is intended.

If you don't piss yourself, you're not alive.

Oh! The humanity.

Wired's 10 Top Scientific Discoveries of 2008

Great article linked below from Wired mag's science department. There are so many amazing things happening in the world that main stream media just doesn't cover. The discoveries that are mentioned here are truly heartwarming in that they demonstrate (to me anyway) what good things man is capable of. It's hard not to imagine that at least half of these discoveries will change not only our world, but our individual lives - maybe yours or mine.

Of course, I can understand why someone would want to know about wars and murders and house fires and snow storms rather than this. That's "news!"

Remembering George

Wow. A fantastic ukulele version of While My Guitar Genty Weeps by uke maven Jake Shimbakuro. I like how the sun breaks through and shines on Jake in the middle of the video. Coincidence? I think not. Also check out the NPR piece on Jake.
